FIFA agent Claudio Della Penna comments on Inter transfers to Il Sussidiario.

“I think that Inter really miss a leader, one that can be like Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Mario Balotelli. And to think that both of them were at Inter at one point… Stramaccioni? He is a good coach but to me, Inter need a charismatic coach like Spalletti, one that can leave an imprint on this club.”

    Lovely Inter agents…

“I think that Inter really miss a leader, one that can be like Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Mario Balotelli.”

Uh… not sure how I exactly feel about those two as leaders. They make some pretty poor examples to follow in terms of psychology, at least. However… that’s where Zanetti shines!

If Ibrahimovic and Balotelli are great leaders, then so are Idi Amin, Hosni Mubarak and Muammar Qaddafi.

      • Sina

Fair enough… but no idea why we are talking about the Arab Spring now.

Idi Amin was before the spring :P and I was just giving an example………. I was going to write Castro but thought someone might be hurt…………. these people no one likes………………..

            I get you! No worries… it’s tasteful.

On a side note… I have so much to do that I get back to people a year later. Not funny! Sorry if this reply is sort of… late/out-of-context.

Yes, I wouldn’t say that Ibra and specially not Mario are great leaders. But Zlatan does have a hunger to win who few can match, and that does somehow affect his teammates. I think though that is depends from games to game, sometime his comments and expressions to teammates can be destructive and sometimes it actually can make players with resembling personalities and mentalities to actually step up. Phew a long sentence there. :)

Exactly… he is a tad bit bi-polar and doesn’t have the consistency that we would need in terms of field leadership. One day, he is happy and hugging all his colleagues after scoring a goal, and the next day… he’s out sabotaging his fellow forward line because they missed one single chance to pass the ball to him when he was open.

I think Della Penna chose the wrong word for these two. A leader is like Zanetti, Cambiasso and Samuel just to name a few. Balotelli and Ibra are winners, champions. Maybe some of you will disagree with me but I would put Eto’o in this category too. These type of players know their strengths very well and use it well due to their position on the field. I think you put it the best way here, Sina. The way Ibra scolds his teammates for passes keeps them on the entire team on their toes, it’s a form of organizing the attack.

Now you might wonder why I mentioned and categorized Eto’o in the same “league” as Ibra and Balotelli. Eto’o was just the same, except without the attitude. I still think see his gestures against Chelsea before my eyes, you know the one, we won a throw-in high up in the field and Eto’o urges the team forward. A couple of seconds later? A rush of unexplainable joy as Cambiasso scores his goal in an unforgettable evening.

I think we’re lacking these profiles today. Milito and Palacio are not the ones to chew out their teammates for a pass that never came. They are effective at what they do. But organizing attacks like Balo and Ibra? My personal opinions of these two players aside, our forwards could use some of the qualities these two possess.

AK17, I completely see where you’re coming from and agree with your perspective. Gratefully, winners and champions aren’t the same thing as passionate leaders, but they do have their fair share of different strengths. I love your analysis on how Ibra’s scolding will keep the team on their feet, something they’ll need to ensure a win.

Eto’o attitude, I had never taken into account at all, but I went back and watched the unforgettable Chelsea match once again and it all makes sense. It’s a bizarre, but understood change of feelings.

These profiles have the passion… the poise… the characters. And arguably, we are lifeless when it comes to this area as of the moment. We can be precise, but there isn’t a heart to drive the team forward. The psychology here plays a huge role in why we’re losing a lot of the games. Cassano is perhaps the only player who does complain about broken short passes and poor plays… and his attitude may come the closest to the aforementioned players (that you named), so the attack organization is missing here.
